The Maldives: Coco Bodu Hithi

by Zoe Bowker

Located just a 45 minute speedboat away from Male, the journey to Maldivian relaxation at Coco Bodu Hithi couldn’t be easier (and you’ll save on those hefty seaplane costs too). There’s plenty of choice when it comes to room type at Coco Bodu Hithi, even multiple options in the over water category – but we decided to check out the villas that Bodu Hithi’s signature villas, the Coco Residences.

Located at the furthest tip of the island, the elliptical jetty housing the luxurious villas gives Residence guests their own ultra-exclusive slice of Maldivian paradise. These villas are perfect for those seeking privacy – ask for a villa at the tip of the jetty to secure unending ocean views. The Coco Residences also have access to an additional fine dining restaurant and bar (Stars) and are conveniently close to the spa and fitness centre (both of which I highly recommend visiting during your stay).

Coco Residence guests have access to full butler services, and you needn’t worry about being a little away from the main restaurants on the island – buggies are always at the ready to whisk you to breakfast, lunch or dinner. You’ve got plenty of choice when it comes to dining at Coco Bodu Hithi too, with five additional dining venues to choose from when you’re not enjoying Stars. For breakfast you have the choice of an impressive buffet offering at Air, or a la carte at Stars. I loved the delicious steak at Stars, but the Maldivian curry at the buffet is hard to pass up – plus they serve prosecco at the buffet breakfast too, the perfect way to kick off a day in paradise!

The Asian cuisine being served up on the island is simply spectacular – we simply loved the curries and noodle dishes being served up at Air, a great spot for lunch with plenty of amazing Thai and Chinese options. The elegant Tsuki is the perfect dinner spot, serving up refined Japanese dishes and signature cocktails – I highly recommend the wagyu tataki.

Of course, you can’t come to the Maldives and not indulge in some top-notch seafood and Coco Bodu Hithi has the perfect venue in which to feast on local delicacies. Their beachside restaurant, Aqua, features over water dining platforms that are something quite special – just ensure you book ahead as these tables book up first.

The island has plenty to satisfy those who love fine dining as much as I do, with Stars offering elegant tasting menus that will impress even the fussiest diner, and Wine Loft providing a selection of vintages that should keep oenophiles occupied for hours. Sommeliers with plenty of wine nous are on hand to recommend the perfect drop and educate on it’s origins. Speaking of wine, Coco has it’s own Champagne by V. Testulat that has a gorgeous label that looks right at home amongst the turquoise waters.

The Coco Residences really feel like a luxury apartment on the water, with separate lounge, bedroom and dressing room spaces, and a fantastic bathroom. His and her vanities flank a luxurious tub built for two that affords fantastic views of the Indian Ocean, and Acqua di Parma’s toiletries are the perfect choice, resplendent in their signature warm yellow.

There’s some good snorkeling not too far from the villa for those who want to experience the marine life, and for those who prefer chilling poolside you’re in luck – the Coco Residence pools are rather large and overhang the gorgeous blue waters. The day bed is also oversized and super comfy – perfect for lazing away hours in the Maldivian sunshine. Should the sunshine be on a break, as can happen in the islands, rainy day activities are on offer too, such as sushi classes and Thai stretching (I think the former is more up my alley).

Coco Bodu Hithi is a great choice for travelers wanting to pair a luxurious island experience with fantastic food. I’m still craving their red curry! Pair that with an easy speedboat transfer and fab butler service and you’d be hard pressed to find a reason not to visit.
